There are numerous exciting retail and leisure developments opening in the West Midlands next year, with Birmingham leading the charge to attract consumers from far and wide. Along with the Grand Central scheme above the refurbished New Street station, the UK’s first integrated leisure and entertainment complex will take up space at the NEC – and owner Genting UK has this week revealed the first two retailers to sign up for space.

Gap Outlet and sporting brand Nike will become the anchor tenants in the Resorts World Birmingham complex, the retail aspect of which will offer 50 units to some of the world’s leading brands. Furthermore, an additional three prospective retail tenants are said to be in the “advanced stage” of the negotiation process, meaning that 23,000 square feet of the total retail space could be let by the end of this month.

In total, the £150 million Resorts World will offer consumers 450,000 square feet of commercial space, of which the retail aspect will form 100,000 square feet. The remaining space will be dedicated to entertainment and leisure, along with a 900 delegate capacity conference and banqueting centre known as “The Vox” which will be operated by the NEC Group.

Managing director for development at Genting UK, Steve Myers, welcomed the new tenants and revealed the strong progress made so far in the tenancy negotiation period.

He said; “The signing of Gap Outlet and Nike is a significant step towards the delivery of our vision for the first Resorts World to open in Europe.

“The scheme is now 70 per cent let and we will be announcing further exciting brands that will join us at Resorts World in the coming months. “Resorts World equates to a direct investment of £150 million not only into the NEC but the West Midlands region by Genting UK – we believe this is the perfect location in which to open a game changing project like this.”

Visitors to Resorts World will have a plethora of choice in ways to pass their time as, along with the sizeable retail footprint, Cineworld will operate an 11 screen multiplex cinema with the UK’s first ever purpose built IMAX experience included. Genting UK itself will operate the on-site casino, along with a number of bars and a Malaysian themed spa.

Guests will have the opportunity to stay at a 178 room four star boutique hotel, also operated by Genting and named the Genting Hotel. It is hoped that this will help to elevate footfall to Resorts World Birmingham along with giving visitors to the NEC Arena a fully rounded experience.

Mr Myers believes that Genting UK’s partnership with the NEC Group will prove beneficial, saying; “This partnership with one of the UK’s leading venues for entertainment will mean we are able to enhance the experience to visitors to both venues.

“When we open in 2015 we are confident that Resorts World Birmingham will transform the leisure and entertainment offer at the NEC and in the wider region.”
