An abandoned Scottish village is set for redevelopment following its sale by CKD Galbraith. Pollphail, in Argyle and Bute, has been bought by Portavadie Forestry which plans to resurrect the 25 acre site with a mixture of residential and commercial property.
Pollphail was built during the North Sea oil boom of the 1970s to house workers involved in the construction of concrete drilling platforms. However, it quickly became apparent that the industry preferred steel constructions and the site has remained unoccupied for 35 years.
During that time a number of planning applications have been approved but nothing has ever materialised. Instead the village, which includes living accommodation, a bar, a bank and even a small hospital, has been allowed to fall into dereliction.
In 2009 urban art collective Agents of Change was given permission to work on the site which has earned the reputation as a ‘ghost village.’ It has also featured in a short documentary film.
Pollphail is situated on the popular Cowal Peninsula overlooking Loch Fyne. With views towards the Mull of Kintyre, the site is ideal for redevelopment and generated a great deal of interest when it was put on the market.
Portavadie Forestry, which paid £250,000 for the village, is currently reviewing its options but initial indications suggest the company is planning a mixed development including a distillery, a visitor centre and residential accommodation.
Speaking about the proposals, a spokesperson said; “This is an exciting opportunity for us to compliment the significant investment made at Portavadie Marina and to transform this site to an additional venue in the area.”
