AXA Real Estate Investment Managers has completed a key milestone in the refurbishment of a Frankfurt office complex, with the installation of the first seven-metre-high ‘Joyful Wave’ sculpture, flowing over 25 metres through the courtyard between the die welle buildings.
Over 7,500 working hours were required to form the geometric component parts of the schneider+schumacher designed sculpture which was executed by Arnold AG. Its installation offers the first glimpse of what the refurbished space will look like when it is completed towards the end of the year.
The refurbishment of the inner courtyard, which has been underway since February, will create a number of green spaces, waterways and relaxing areas which will further enhance the public realm of the prominent office location and help to develop it into a lively urban area.
Matthias Leube, Managing Director of AXA Investment Managers Deutschland GmbH dedicated to Real Estate, explained that the installation is only the beginning of the external refurbishment project.
He said “The ‘Joyful Wave’ sculpture constitutes the first part of a large overall sculpture which, after installation, will flow through the entire length of the outer area like a wave. This design harmoniously joins the two buildings of the die welle area.
“The impressive size of the sculpture and the vibrant individual elements create a new centre of attraction within the Opera Quarter.”
AXA obtained permission for the redesign and refurbishment of the three-building complex in the district of Westend-South in January. The sculpture takes its name from the striking architecture of the buildings, which were constructed between 1998 and 2003.
In total they provide approximately 75,400 sq m of above ground space, the majority of which is office space, with the remainder set aside for retail and service provider use. Tenants include banks, law firms and financial institutions.
Overall, the refurbishment scheme involves remodelling the lobby areas and concierge services, expanding the food, leisure and wellness offer, redesigning the signposting system and doubling the amount of green space. Upon completion the scheme promises to offer tenants and visitors a ‘high leisure and social quality with a feel-good factor’.
