Specialist Newcastle chartered surveyor, Silverstone Building Consultancy, has completed the half-a-million pound refurbishment of Dronfield Leisure Centre in Derbyshire— within a strict 14-week deadline set by the facility’s local authority owners.
The Tyneside firm, which offers building surveying and project management services to the commercial property sector, was initially appointed by North East Derbyshire District Council to act as an expert witness after complaints of “defective workmanship” from a previous refurbishment.
Following that commission Silverstone was hired to project manage the £550,000 refurbishment of the swimming pool and changing rooms in a little over three months to allow the new season opening of the facility to the public. Leeds-based Wood Mitchell was appointed as contractor.
The upgrade included replacing the pool liners in each of the building’s swimming pools, improved access, installing under water LED lighting, new windows, and revamping changing room areas and shower facilities with improved drainage and separate air handling systems.
“Whilst we are Newcastle-based and 75 per cent of our work is carried out in the North East we are keen to expand our geographical reach and we are pleased to be working on a number of jobs outside the region including this latest project in Derbyshire,” explained Silverstone director, Richard Farrey.
“After investigating the problems at the leisure centre we were very keen to get involved and provide exactly what the council needed in order to get the swimming pool back up and running for the general public,” he added.
“Working outside of the North East region didn’t present any challenges for us and we are looking forward to taking on further projects across the UK.”
The leader of North East Derbyshire District Council is Graham Baxter. “We were delighted with the quality of workmanship, professionalism and efficiency of Silverstone,” he commented. “They delivered everything we asked for on time and to a very good standard and would have no hesitation in using their services again.”
Founded in 2009 Silverstone employs eight staff in the North East. The Derbyshire contract was the latest of a series completed outside of the region during the past year. Others involved building and dilapidations surveys in Bolton, Edinburgh, Chester and Wakefield and the refurbishment to a city centre office building in York.
