Stirling Properties has announced the grand opening of a new full-service Walgreens drug store in New Orleans. The 13,000 sq ft facility, which is located at 5518 Magazine Street, is situated in a building with plenty of patriotic history.
Parts of the site used to be the Ed Brauner American Legion Post #397. To pay tribute to the property’s history, the interior design includes images and symbols connected to the American Legion.
To develop the property in a manner that would be appealing to the local residents, area retailers and the city officials, the Stirling design team held several meetings with interested parties.
After reaching a consensus, it replaced the front and rear facades of the property. The interior was fully gutted and new large windows were installed to allow for natural light. A new pedestrian access on Magazine Street was also created to encourage increased footfall and walk-in customers. The developers also added a rear parking lot to the property.
The new building will offer a full-service pharmacy. It will also offer a drive-through window and a high-end cosmetics boutique.
Stirling Properties’ Vice President of Development, Peter Aamodt, said, “This adaptive-reuse project represents a true cooperative effort between Stirling Properties, Walgreens, the city of New Orleans, local retailers and surrounding neighborhoods.
“Without public input and citizen participation, we could never have achieved this level of success. We are proud to bring a once distressed but historically significant property back to prominence once again.”
Stirling Properties will begin work on a second Walgreens location in New Orleans soon. Construction is scheduled to start in April, and this project will relocate an existing Walgreens store.
The new location will provide 17,384 sq ft of retail space and is expected to open in the third quarter.
