Survey says Internet is More Important than Water

Posted on 17 April, 2013 by Neil Bird

There’s good news for web-based businesses this week after a survey found the internet has become more important to households than water, heating or television.

In the results of the survey, conducted by Infosecurity Europe, 38 per cent of the 1000 respondents listed a lack of internet access as the most stressful when compared to other household problems.

In comparison 32 per cent said having no water is the most stressful and 18 per cent cited a lack of heating. No television was the most annoying factor for just 8 per cent of respondents, while another 4 per cent would be stressed out by the lack of a washing machine.

The findings, published by Dezeen, go on to reveal that 27 per cent don’t think they could cope without the internet at all. Another 25 per cent said they could manage for a single day and 29 per cent for a few days.

Only 4 per cent of the London commuters approached for the street survey said they wouldn’t miss the internet at all.

Further questioning found that being unable to get online in the office is now more stressful that being late for work or having a bad journey.

The number saying they would be unable to cope at all is 10 per cent up on a similar survey conducted last year.  This rise suggests reliance on the internet is growing rapidly as it becomes increasingly central to the way we organise our lives.
