Urban regeneration specialists THAT Group have submitted a planning application for the mixed-use transformation of a row of empty stores in Bristol’s Clifton Village.
The privately owned property group initially proposed the plans for 2-16 Clifton Down Road last summer. The plans would have brought a number of refurbished retail units and quality apartments to the area, yet these were put on hold due to “lack of demand”.
Now, thanks to the upturn in the economy and a growing demand for space by both national and local retailers, the project may finally be about to begin, the Bristol Post reports.
Under the new plans the existing building would be demolished and replaced with a new supermarket, a restaurant unit and a total of 14 residential apartments, along with a number of flexible ground floor units thought to be earmarked as smaller café premises. Several new shops are also in the pipeline, and early rumours indicate that Sainsbury’s has expressed an interest in taking the lease of the supermarket unit.
However, a number of local residents expressed concerns that the new building would be unsympathetic to the area. As a result, THAT Group made several changes to their original Design and Access Statement, which have been included in the most recent planning application submitted to Bristol City Council.
In the statement, THAT Group said; “We believe that the changes we have made to the proposed scheme have shown a serious commitment to addressing officers’ concerns, and that the resulting scheme is an improved one, benefitting from the dialogue we have had.
“We think, as before, that the provision of these new homes and workspaces on this site, by a developer who is committed to quality materials and construction standards, will also be a significant benefit to Clifton.”
