All international real estate is a risky investment, whether we are talking commercial property or setting up serviced offices, but the more bizarre real estate investment choice must be buying acreage on the moon.
In 1980 Lunar Embassy marketed astral acreage, meaning you could buy land on the moon for an affordable $37 per acre. Lunar Embassy boasts a few million buyers and over 3 million acres sold. The legitimacy of the land ownership remains hotly contested, but the company not only offers it for novelty, but also as a ‘potential prudent investment.’
However, you don’t have to go that far afield to invest in some offshore property. Brazil is at present the most talked about emerging market in the world. The Brazilian economy, has been growing so rapidly, that investment groups like JP Morgan have forecast that Brazil would be the fifth largest economy in the world by 2050.
This theory was further demonstrated when oil reserves were recently found in the country. We all know that oil reserves alone can make a country extremely wealthy, let alone one that already has huge agricultural exports.
The test of Brazil is whether the wealth is distributed to the poorer side of society. According to recent reports, average Brazilian’s are becoming more and more affluent and the middle class is growing.
This should help the other great problem, the crime rate. It is a well known fact that poverty breeds crime, so increasing affluence and reducing poverty will automatically reduce crime.
Then Brazil was awarded the honour and the privilege of hosting the 2014 World Cup, shortly before it won the (some would say even bigger) honour and privilege of hosting the Olympic games. These really completed the picture of Brazil as the world’s favourite emerging market.
I recommend investing in low-profile commercial property, which will benefit from the increasing demand as the middle class grows.
