With New Year fast approaching, many UK workers will be turning their thoughts to potential resolutions they could make for the coming year. If your resolution is to move on with your career, find a more enjoyable work environment or even start afresh in a new workplace you’re in luck, as the top 25 places to work in the UK have now been revealed.
Jobs website Glassdoor has compiled the list based on employee recommendations and feedback sent to the site over the past year, with thousands of users having sent in their reviews.
They rated their company based on key attributes including career progression opportunities, culture and values of their employer and any compensation and benefits they received, along with judging the company CEO’s leadership qualities and how well their employer strived to enable a work to life balance for staff members.
This year, Google claimed the top spot on the list with a 4.4 out of 5 rating. Anonymous members of staff praised “the level of trust given to employees” along with the “cool culture” and “amazing people” in the London office.
One staff engineer said; “I can choose what projects I want to work on, and how I want to solve things.
“I have the ability to make changes that have a huge impact on my team.”
While Google was not the only technology firm to make it into the top 25, engineering and manufacturing played a major roll with firms such as Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls Royce and BP all featuring. The financial sector also proved hugely popular, with JP Morgan, Deloitte, HSBC, American Express and Credit Suisse claiming several of the top spots.
Unsurprisingly, however, John Lewis managed to bag second place on the survey, furthering its public image as a strong, employee orientated company. Employees praised the collaborative culture and the annual bonus scheme, with the 4.3 out of 5 rating putting it only 0.1 point behind Google.
John Lewis grocery brand Waitrose also made it into the top 25, taking the 22nd place. Sandwiched between the two at number 12 was Harrods, indicating that the luxury goods market remains very profitable for employees in the current economic climate.
Overall, the survey indicated that the financial and technology sectors are two of the most progressive and rewarding areas in which to work for UK employees, especially in companies which embrace initiatives designed to assist workers in maintaining a work life balance. Third placed Microsoft, for example, received a lot of positive feedback for its flexible working programme, while 8th placed Cisco Systems also strived towards this using flexible training and development courses.
If you intend to apply to any of these companies in the New Year, you should be aware that competition is particularly high so a strong CV is a must. Otherwise, employee feedback has indicated that management are friendly and approachable, which should take the edge off the pre-interview nerves a little!
