Pets at Home, the UK’s largest supplier of pet products has paid a reported £40 million for 94 veterinary clinics owned by Vets4Pets.
Pets at Home which has 345 stores, already offers veterinary treatments which is run by Companion Care. They currently offer services in 116 stores including: grooming and health checks. With the acquisition of Vets4Pets, Pets at Home will now be able to extend its in-store veterinary services to become a key competitor in the animal veterinary market.
Pets at Home have come a long way from just selling cat food and dog toys. They have a selection of animals for sale, including: rabbits, hamsters and fish as well as offering to advertise animals that need rehoming.
Speaking of the acquisition, Nick Wood, CEO of Pets at Home, said: “The expansion of our veterinary business is a key element of our growth strategy for Pets at Home, providing additional services to our customers within our stores or close to our customers’ homes.
“The acquisition of Vets4Pets is an important step in the delivery of this strategy. Vets4Pets is highly complementary to Companion Care, haring fundamental beliefs and values, and is an excellent strategic fit for Pets at Home.”
Vets4Pets was founded by Peter Watson in 2001. Prior to setting up the business, Peter was the former executive of Vision Express. The business has grown strongly over the last 12 years and Vets4Pets is probably most recognisable for offering the “Vac4Life.” This is a vaccination programme for dogs, cats and rabbits which costs just £99 and includes initial vaccinations and annual boosters – thus saving customers hundreds of pounds.
Speaking of the deal, Peter Watson, CEO of Vets4Pets, said: “Pets at Home holds a unique place in the retail landscape, built on a strong identity and a real passion for people and pets.
“It is clear to me that Nick and his team have a similar vision for their veterinary business. I’m delighted to be working with Nick to continue to expand the veterinary business by offering attractive joint venture opportunities for vets in stand-alone locations to complement the offering in Pets at Home stores.”
