The Fernsehturm is a television tower in central Berlin, Germany.
The Fernsehturm was built between 1965 and 1969, with the intension to become a symbol of Berlin. Today it is visible throughout central Berlin and some of the city’s suburban districts. It is officially the tallest structure in the country, measuring at 368 metres, and is the among the tallest structure in the EU.
The tower was built by a number of different architects; Fritz Dieter, Günter Franke and Werner Ahrendt.
The sphere, which is based about half way up the tower is a leisure area for the general public, with a visitor platform and a revolving restaurant. The visitor platform, also known as panoramic floor, is at the height of 203 metres, allowing visitors to see up a distance 42 kilometers on a clear day. The restaurant Telecafe, rotates once every 30 minutes, allowing diners to have a 360-degree view of the city of Berlin. The panoramic floor is situated below the restaurant.
In order to gain access to both the restaurant and panoramic floor, there is a double lift system to shuttle visitors to the sphere in under a minute. However, for those who want a challenge, there is a stairway with 986 steps, which also provides access to the sphere.
