Earlier in the year Movehut News carried an article reflecting on the office of 25 years ago. It illustrated the pace of technological change and how rapidly indispensable gadgets can become obsolete museum pieces.
We all know change is ongoing and that this Christmas’ must have gadget will be outmoded come the summer, so what will the office look like 25 years from now?
Will we still be chained to our keyboards and monitors or will they have joined the telex machine and the floppy disk in the museum display? Here Movehut looks ahead to what you might find in the office of the future.
It’s Christmas 2037 and everyone in the office is looking forward to the coming holiday. Despite the predictions of some, that mobile technologies would make the workplace itself redundant, the office has not disappeared but they are very different work spaces than they were 25 years ago.
They are now immersive environments in which colleagues share information between different floors, cities and continents via devices that enable them to enter an interactive virtual space. There are no wires cluttering offices like tangles of spaghetti and the mouse disappeared years ago.
Conference calls and webcams are a thing of the past too. Now board meetings and team briefings can be conducted holographically although there are still glitches in this technology that are frustrating and amusing in equal measure.
The virtual advent calendar in the office has been a source of amusement too. Throughout the month, as the windows have been opened, reindeer and angels have danced through the office in a blaze of light.
However on one morning no-one will forget the window swung open to release a tribe of zombies that a mischievous developer had concealed inside, much to the horror of a nervous colleague.
This evening everyone is gathering to raise a glass to a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Many things may have changed but some traditions remain the same.
