Whiteley, Hampshire’s newest retail and leisure destination, has enjoyed a bumper first month’s trading. Since its official opening, on 23rd May, more than 750,000 visitors have shopped at the 320,000 sq ft scheme including a huge 48,000 on the launch day alone.

Whiteley, which is owned by British Land and Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), has 58 shops and restaurants set around a stylish open air market square. Among the national retail brands to have taken space on the site are anchor tenant M&S, Topshop, H&M, Next, River Island and Fat Face.

Restaurants and cafés include Dean’s Diner, Caffe Nero, Frankie & Benny’s, Costa Coffee and Chimichanga. Shoppers will also find several local independent retailers at Whiteley including Little Soles children’s shoe shop, Xpress Beauty and Solent Cycles. Estate agent Walker & Waterer is also among the local tenants.

Claire Barber, head of shopping centre asset management at British Land, is delighted with the first month of trading.

“The response from shoppers and retailers since opening has been amazing. With a unique blend of high street and independent retailers, Whiteley provides many reasons to visit and is well balanced to meet the different ways in which people shop,” she said.

Whiteley, which is situated between Portsmouth and Southampton, has an affluent catchment area of 1.2 million people with an estimated potential spending power of £3.1 billion. This is set to grow further in the near future with another 3,500 new homes in the pipeline.

The development has created over 1,000 permanent jobs in the area.
