Do you need to buy your own commercial property or even rent a serviced office? I ask this because of the recent trend to work from home. But before one can answer this question one has to take a few factors into account. Firstly one should look at the purely practical side of things. By this I mean; is it possible in a purely physical sense? It is possible to do a large range of things from home ranging from pure office work all the way up to very light manufacturing such as engraving etc. Once you have established whether it is practical from the physical aide then one has to make some financial decisions. Are you going to save money – usually, except for very unusual circumstances, this answer is – Yes. You will save on rent, work clothes, commuting to and from work and reduce vehicle maintenance costs. But don’t forget to factor in extra insurance, electricity, heating and so on.
The most difficult part of working at home is separating personal and work life. Because the office is located within the home, it’s difficult to escape work and vice-versa, when children are present it is hard to ignore them.
Even if the job is carried out in a separate room, such as a dedicated home office, work may always be difficult to set aside because the home is the office building. So, it takes a lot of mental discipline to separate the two and carve out enough personal and family time.
Personally – I would say that, unless you have to work from home due to personal reasons such as caring for someone or inability to commute, then it is always better to rent a small serviced office and actually physically go to work
In the long run this will enhance performance, professionalism and result in higher output.
