Recently it has been all over the news about a 60 year celebration happening this week, but a York commercial property has a topped this and is celebrating 75 years in service.
Betty’s, a café based in York has witnessed colour televisions being introduced, survived a world war and the millennium bug all whilst serving tea and cakes to approximately 650,000 people every year. In a statement, the commercial property spoke of its landmark success: “Back in June 1937 our York Tea Room opened its doors for the very first time.
“The tea room’s interiors were inspired by founder Frederick Belmont’s holiday of a lifetime – a trip on the maiden voyage of Queen Mary – and still today the branch is widely know for its elegant Art Deco interiors and rich history.”
The café which was founded by Frederick Belmont opened in June 1937 and serves anything from chocolate cake, shortbread and ginger biscuits to tea and coffee.
Lesley Wild, non-executive chairman of the commercial property spoke of how proud the founder, Frederick Belmont would be of the last 75 years of trading. She said: “He would have been particularly delighted by the way in which Betty’s has become so well loved the world over and, of course, that it is still a family business after 90 years.
On the very special occasion of our 75th anniversary in York, I would like to offer my deepest thanks to the wonderful staff here and our many loyal customers who have contributed so much over the years to our continuing success.”
The café in York employs around 170 members of staff and serves roughly 650,000 people every year. It has proved popular over the last 75 years, thus its success today – as on many occasions people are queuing outside the door waiting for a seat.
Have you visited Betty’s commercial property in York? If not, what would be your fancy? Shortbread and a cup of tea or are you a ginger biscuit person who enjoys nothing more than a good cup of coffee?
