Amidst the craze for vintage fashion and interior design inspired, in large part, by television shows such as Mad Men, the hotel sector is choosing to play catch-up by introducing boutique trends into major international cities. In Manchester, this has come in the form of Hotel Gotham, which this week opened its doors to the public following an extensive renovation.
The former banking property has been transformed into a five star luxury hotel set to take the city by storm, with heavy inspiration taken from the building’s original art deco roots.
Owners of the King Street venue have retained many original features of the Grade II listed Edwin Lutyens designed building, and given the refurbished hotel a nostalgic feel. They hope these vintage touches and high class interior design will allow Hotel Gotham to live-up to the title of “Europe’s sexiest hotel.”
Laid out over seven storeys, Hotel Gotham comprises of 60 bedrooms which range in size from single rooms up to the sprawling “Gotham Suites” and “Inner Sanctum Suites”, with prices ranging from £150 per night to £1,000 per night.
Yet size is not the only reward granted to higher paying guests, as the suites also feature black and white video montages detailing Manchester’s major architectural landmarks in a style playfully described as “Manc-hattan”.
For the ultimate gourmand, the location of Hotel Gotham is ideal as the lower two floors of the property are occupied by Jamie’s Italian restaurant. This has necessitated the removal of the main reception, which is now found on the sixth floor, although a smaller entrance hall manned 24 hours by bell boys has been established at ground level.
Developer Marshall CDP has hailed the project as a huge success despite the fact it has only been open to the public for a few days, citing the fact that the ambitious project was completed both on time and within budget as a huge success in the current economic climate.
Group managing director Simon Marshall told the Manchester Evening News; “Hotel Gotham is a unique scheme that has caused a stir on an international level.
“As the owner as well as the contractor for the Lutyens-designed building, we worked closely with Bespoke Hotels as well as Manchester City Council and English Heritage to create a dramatic yet functional space for the hotel whilst sensitively considering the unique attributes of this iconic building.
“The hotel is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the neighbouring designer retailers and high-end restaurants and with further investment planned and more new occupiers set to move into the area in the coming months, King Street is one of Manchester’s most vibrant destinations.”
The Hotel Gotham also features the 68-cover Honey Restaurant, serving brasserie classics with a contemporary twist, and the exclusive members-only Club Brass.
