  • Once voted in 2014 as the highest ranked British city apart from London, Manchester is a city filled with culture and strong businesses.
  • It has the largest UK office market outside of London, with a reported 250,000 sq ft of take up between 2010-2014. The main contributor to the take-up is office space not being as expensive as its Southern counterpart.

2. Stockport

  • Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council in recent years has set out on an ambitious regeneration scheme. Called ‘Future Stockport’, the scheme is aiming to bring 3000 residents in the centre and revitalise both the residential and retail markets. Many ex industrial areas in the town’s core will become mixed-use residential and commercial developments.

3. Trafford

  • Historically, the area’s economy was dominated by agriculture and has since had a thriving economy.
  • Trafford is a prosperous area, where the average weekly income is £394. The biggest contributors to the economy, in line with national figures, are property and business services (17.1%), retail and wholesale (16.5%) and manufacturing (12.3%).

4. City of Salford

  • With its revitalisation in recent years with the newly developed MediaCityUK on the Salford Quay, it is an area full of character and potential.
  • The biggest growth industries in the area are finance and professional services, tourism and culture, as well as computer and internet based services.

5. Bolton

Population – 128,139

Notable Industries – Manufacturing

  • Known as the Boomtown during the 19th century and industrial revolution, Bolton is still one of the hardest working areas.
  • The heavy industry influence was replaced in the 20th century with call centres, hi-tech electronic and IT companies. Traditional industries still remain in the town however, with paper manufacturing, textiles, steel foundries and building materials having a strong presence.
