Bishops Gate Hoping To Breathe New Life Into Coventrys Commercial Property Market

Coventry is hoping to breathe life into its commercial property market, with the announcement of the ambitious Bishops Gate development scheme.

West Midlands-based Barberry Developments have been appointed as developers for the £50m scheme, which will help to transform a neglected area of Coventry city centre. Barberry wrote on the developments website. ‘At Bishop Gate we plan to create an exciting mixed use scheme, anchored by a superstore of up to 130,000 sq ft, state of the art health and fitness club, and circa 585 parking spaces. Working in partnership with Coventry City Council, we will deliver a major superstore and retail/leisure development that complements perfectly Coventry’s ambitious regeneration masterplan.’

Along with the supermarket, car parking facilities and  gym facility, the commercial property development will include boulevard-style pedestrianised zones.

The scheme was given initial planning permission last month. It is hoped the project will kick start Coventry’s commercial property market.   Martin Yardley, Coventry City Councils, deputy director of city development, told Insider Media: ‘Bishop Gate will really transform a run down and tired part of the city centre – which is absolutely fantastic. But when you think how much the developer and our council team have achieved together it goes to show how well set up we are to turn the right ideas for our fine city into a reality.’

Shop owners in the surrounding areas are hopeful the scheme will help their business. Amy MacDonald, owner of Corporate Gift World, at the nearby Canal Basin, told the Coventry Telegraph: ‘The basin is often neglected and the bridge is an obstacle for people coming from town. Bishop Street is a ghost town too so I think the development can only be good for the area.’

In order to boost the commercial property sector, the UK requires more and more commercial property developments like Bishops Gate.
