The newly elected Conservative government has been urged by Birmingham based business leaders that they need to “work urgently” in promoting the confidence and growth of the West Midlands.

While the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has pushed the West Midlands region to create a combined authority, which was originally indicated to be the right course of action by the then coalition government.

The president of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, Greg Lowson, said: “As the largest party, the Conservative Party has an opportunity to form the next Government.

“As it makes the case to do so, the Conservatives must demonstrate how it will support British business and help us to deliver wider prosperity.

“Support for investment, infrastructure, apprenticeships and exports would promote business confidence and growth, whereas more regulation, tax and uncertainty over the nation’s finances would hit jobs, wages and prosperity”.

Mr Lowson also said that the Conservatives need to make clear how it is going to eradicate “the budget deficit, improve Britain’s infrastructure, including an unequivocal commitment to support airport expansion and understand how it will deliver a new settlement for Britain in Europe”.

He also mentioned the importance of businesses helping win over the wider region in which to create the combined authority, that will help make a “West Midlands Powerhouse”.

In Greater Birmingham, one of the biggest changes was Liberal Democrat member Lorely Burt, who lost her seat to the Conservatives’ Julian Knight.

Lowson commented “We must now look at creating a relationship with the new MP to promote the interests of one of the most important areas in Greater Birmingham”.
