A twenty year vision to create a global professional services hub in Birmingham has been unveiled today.

The Snowhill Masterplan outlines the redevelopment of the Snow Hill and Colmore districts of the city to deliver a Midland’s rival to Canary Wharf.

The £600 million plan, launched by Colmore Business District and Birmingham City Council, will deliver 2.2 million sq ft of new office space aimed at financial and professional service firms and creating 10,000 new jobs.

Leader of Birmingham City Council, Sir Albert Bore, commented “The Snow Hill Masterplan provides a bold and exciting proposal for how Birmingham can continue to grow its thriving business and professional services sector.

“With time, we want the city to replicate the success of Canary Wharf, with areas like the Snow Hill district forming the cornerstone of this vision.

“Plans such as the revitalisation of Snow Hill Station will strengthen Birmingham’s position as a destination for national and international BPFS firms that want to expand, attract skilled staff and join other successful companies in their sector”.

Gary Cardin, the chair of Colmore Business District (CBD), said that the plan “paints a picture of new landmark developments that will expand CBD and provide a sustainable supply of high-quality office and mixed-use office space, supporting strong business and residential growth for decades to come”.

There are also plans to transform the A38, making it a new urban boulevard, connecting with both the Jewellery and Gun Quarters. There will also be support for the £127 million extension of Metro network through Birmingham City Centre.

There will be a public consultation over the plans between February 9 and March 23.
