Primark Teams Up With Online Fashion Retailer Asos

Primark has begun selling clothes online through internet fashion merchant Asos. The fashion retailer said it would sell a limited range of items online for a trial period, in order for the company to gain “insight” into online retailing.

The budget high street chain has so far avoided investing in an online presence, focusing instead on growing its high street presence.

Primark is famous for offering budget fashion targeted at young customers.

The trial with Asos will involve a limited range of items for a limited time; however a Primark spokesman did not say how long the trial would last for.

In a statement announcing the new venture, Asos described Primark as a “retail phenomenon”.

“With their unique take on the latest must-haves and newest trends, Primark fans can get their hands on their award-winning affordable fashion, from skinny jeans and denim to skater dresses and printed t-shirts,” it said.

However, the Primark spokesman said that the company remained focused on rolling out new stores in the UK and across continental Europe. The retailer has 257 stores across eight countries including Britain, Ireland and Spain.

Primark is planning to open a store in the southern French port city of Marseille in December and a second store in Dijon – its first move into France.

Primark has fought the retail gloom thanks to its focus on low prices at a time when many retailers find the going tough as consumers worry over job security and a squeeze on incomes.

Asos has also bucked the overall retail gloom, with total sales rising 34 per cent to £352.3m in the six months to the end of February.

The group said its websites attract nearly 20 million unique visitors every month.
