Work is scheduled to begin this month to fix the ‘death-ray’ effect at the City’s Walkie-Talkie skyscraper, the developers have announced.

Planning permission has been granted for the installation of sun-shades on the building which will prevent a repetition of the solar glare which melted parts of cars and neighbouring properties last summer. The work is expected to take six months to complete.

Joint developer Land Securities said the incident, which earned the £500 million building the nickname the Walkie-Scorchie, had drawn attention to the property for the wrong reasons but had failed to deter lettings.

This was confirmed earlier this month when law firm DWF and US insurance firm CNA became the latest tenants to agree terms, bringing the pre-let figure to 87 per cent.

It has also been revealed that the building’s Sky Garden attraction has been delayed due to engineering issues. It is now expected to open to the public in August.
